FalconStor(R) Updates Its Migration, Continuity, and Protection-Recovery Solutions

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FalconStor Software (R), Inc. (FALC), a market leader in data protection and migration, today announced product updates to its Migration, Continuity, and Protection-Recovery solutions. Major highlights include additional migration support for service providers and cloud-ready data centers, new encryption at rest technology, and 195 percent improved data recovery speed compared to the previous version.

Service providers and cloud-ready environments can leverage the benefits of FalconStor technology installed on the latest blade platforms from Dell, while utilizing faster Xeon processors and Qlogic converged network adapters for a smaller data center footprint. This update allows customers and service providers to deploy FalconStor solutions in a consolidated, optimized, and cloud-ready data center.

"The biggest challenge many organizations face when adopting cloud is migrating their data from its existing location to the new infrastructure. We're focused on expanding our technology capabilities and partners to enable more users to adopt private clouds," said Gary Quinn, President and CEO, FalconStor. "FalconStor leverages a component of its optimized data services, Intelligent Abstraction, which enables data to move from an existing storage device onto a cloud infrastructure seamlessly and transparently to the customer."

As part of the deduplication solution update, FalconStor has introduced new encryption at rest technology to provide the highest level of security for data protection. For environments that have strict security requirements or are required to comply with government regulations, this technology provides the ability to encrypt all data being sent to virtual tape. Data is deduplicated and encrypted as it is stored on disk. FalconStor's encryption at rest offering will be provided free of charge, and is available for all new installations.

"We're committed to consistently updating products with features and functionality that our customer base requires. For organizations with highly sensitive data, especially the federal government, this feature ensures compliance with regulatory and industry security requirements," added Quinn.

Additional product updates:

  • Restore speeds of up to 16TB/hr, a 195 percent improvement compared to the previous version, helping avoid costly downtime.
  • Database and application support list expanded to include Windows 2012R2, Hyper-V 201R2 Clusters, and SQL Server 2014 database.
  • New functionality that allows users to choose which storage and protection features participate in the stretch cluster configuration; reducing the storage and implementation costs of providing high availability for applications and servers.
  • Snapshot groups can now create simultaneous snapshots of up to 256 virtual devices, to increase the volume of data that can be protected simultaneously, reduce the number of backup jobs, and further reduce recovery times.
  • Improved management and reporting capabilities for FalconStor Protection-Recovery: including new performance monitoring, disk usage reports, and multi-select features. Users can monitor the load and performance of ports, LUNs, devices, and snapshots, in either real-time or historical views, right from the centralized administration console.
  • The deduplication console now provides full support for the Chinese language.

"All of these upgrades contribute to our mission of providing customers freedom. Adding to our supported technology list gives customers the peace of mind to update technology without the fear of lock-in or lack of support. Reduced recovery times, expanded reporting, and simpler management all contribute to giving our customers the freedom to manage their data how they want," concluded Quinn.

Kroll Ontrack Expands Its Support for Externalized Storage and Shredded Files to StorSimple SharePoint Database ...

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Kroll Ontrack, the leading provider of data recovery and ediscovery products and services, today announced the availability of Ontrack® PowerControls™ version 7.2. Adding support for StorSimple SharePoint Database Optimizer, in addition to Metalogix StoragePoint and FileStream, Ontrack PowerControls is a comprehensive tool for accessing, searching and restoring externalized Microsoft SharePoint 2013 data. It also addresses the complex challenge of reassembling shredded files directly from a SharePoint 2013 backup without needing to restore the entire database.

The StorSimple solution uses SharePoint APIs to offload large BLOBs from SharePoint databases. This helps maintain performance levels for SharePoint servers and facilitates SharePoint disaster recovery by reducing the size of the databases that must be restored. Leveraging Ontrack PowerControls 7.2 empowers IT administrators to granularly rebuild these externalized databases and shredded SharePoint files during the restore process.

“Native SharePoint SQL storage is very expensive and huge database volumes can impact performance, so organizations leverage remote BLOB solutions like StorSimple to externalize BLOB data to reduce storage costs and increase performance,” said Tom McCaffrey, product director for enterprise solutions, Kroll Ontrack. “Ontrack PowerControls 7.2 allows IT administrators to restore individual items without conducting a full database restore.”

Results from a recent Ontrack PowerControls customer survey revealed that 34 percent of respondents frequently receive requests for restoring SharePoint items, lists, libraries and folders. Forty-one percent of those surveyed went on to say they save more than 50 percent of time responding to these requests leveraging Ontrack PowerControls than using traditional restoration methods.

“Granular item restore with Ontrack PowerControls 7.2 is a game changer in how search and restoration from BLOBs is addressed, and we couldn’t be happier with the result,” said Burzin Patel, marketing director for StorSimple, Microsoft Corporation. “StorSimple customers can easily locate critical files, and restore them with ease, saving significant time.”

In addition to support for StorSimple, Ontrack PowerControls 7.2 also supports Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Microsoft SharePoint 2013 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Office 2013 Service Pack (SP1). IMServ Improves Data Protection and Lowers Disaster Recovery Costs with Silver Peak

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Silver Peak, the leader in accelerating data over distance, has been selected by IMServ, one of the UK’s largest energy data management providers, to help transfer growing volumes of data between its data center in Milton Keynes and its disaster recovery (DR) site 50 miles away. Covering more than 400 servers and around 250 users, IMServ manages highly time critical secure customer data and relies heavily on high network performance, stability, and availability. By deploying Silver Peak’s virtual data acceleration appliances, IMServ has been able to improve its DR strategy without the upfront investment of a costly bandwidth upgrade.

Faced with a static infrastructure, IMServ’s technical team was finding it difficult to cope with the exponential growth of current and historic data it was starting to manage. IMServ’s data usage began to exceed its 50 megabit-per-second (Mbps) network bandwidth allowance, resulting in escalating costs. IMServ was subsequently under growing pressure to optimize its existing IT infrastructure in a way that would improve data delivery, increase flexibility and reduce expenditure.

IMServ first considered upgrading to a larger wide area network (WAN) link, however the location of the DR site along with the large upfront payment needed became a problem. Subsequently, IMServ turned to leading IT solutions reseller, Future Generations Solutions (FGGL), who recommended maximizing the existing WAN efficiency between both sites. Having considered other known WAN optimization providers, IMServ chose to deploy Silver Peak for its high performance, simple deployment and flexible pricing model.

“Our priority is protecting our customer’s data, which means sending it from the live site to the disaster recovery center as fast, secure and efficiently as possible,” said Morgan Rogers, head of IT technical at IMServ. “Before deploying Silver Peak, we were approaching a barrier with our data replication, and as an IT manager I wanted as little disruption to our services as possible. Upgrading bandwidth was not a preferred option, so we decided that if we couldn’t make the pipe fatter, then we would make the data move faster. As well as Silver Peak’s WAN optimization software fitting unobtrusively on top of our existing infrastructure, we were able to integrate it with our data replication products, and natively with our chosen SAN infrastructure, and install it in less than 20 minutes. However, what really made it stand out was the subscription pricing model, which made the whole process a lot more financially feasible.”

Since deploying Silver Peak’s WAN optimization software, IMServ has transformed its DR strategy. Outages and planned maintenance work can be easily managed without any downtime, and the company has seen data availability increase, particularly with some of the migrations’ on-the-fly elements of virtualization.

“When we initially installed the trial version of Silver Peak’s software, it made such a difference that we just couldn’t turn it off,” continued Rogers. “Right from the start, it made our 50 Mbps lease line run as if it was in excess of a 200 Mbps line, giving us little incentive to go elsewhere. It was like a puppy dog â€" once we had it, we didn’t want to give it back.”

“As IMServ’s business expanded, like a lot of companies in their position, they wanted to be sure that they were prepared for the volumes of data that came with it and the growth of data traversing the network,” said Damon Dance, sales consultant at FGGL. “As such, they required a solution that would prevent them from falling victim to bandwidth, latency and packet loss issues that often plague IT managers. Silver Peak came out on top and provided the perfect solution due to its ease of deployment and flexible pricing model.”

Copper Dips As China Data Disappoints, Gold Exposed To USD Recovery

Talking Points

  • Copper pulls back from resistance following disappointing Chinese economic data
  • Gold and silver exposed to a strong upcoming US Retail Sales print
  • Crude oil continues to struggle below the $101 handle as supply glut concerns weigh on prices

Disappointing Chinese economic data has put pressure copper prices today, as traders weigh the potential for a slowdown in growth to crimp the Asian Giant’s appetite for base metals. Meanwhile, gold and silver’s recent recovery may be under threat from an upside surprise to upcoming US Retail Sales data via the US Dollar side of the equation. Similarly, continued concerns over a supply glut in the US oil market may weigh on crude oil prices as WTI struggles below the $101.00 handle.

Chinese Growth Concerns Crimp Copper Prices

Weaker-than-anticipated Chinese Retail Sales and Industrial Production figures for April have put pressure on copper prices during Asian trading. As a leading indicator for economic activity, the drop in Retail Sales growth to the lowest level since 2011 has likely fuelled further concerns over a potential slowdown in Chinese economic growth. Additionally, the 5th consecutive decline for the growth in industrial production represents a worrying trend, that if continued may lead to lower demand for commodities from the Asian giant. Further speculation over a deceleration in the country’s economic growth could leave copper vulnerable to a correction.

US Dollar Recovery Threatens Gold Gains

Tensions in Eastern Europe remain on traders’ radars as the ongoing Ukrainian crisis continues to create safe-haven demand for gold and silver. While the latest developments in the region suggest a resolution at this stage remains unlikely, the absence of an escalation may leave gold vulnerable to renewed selling pressure.

In the session ahead the precious metalsmay find some additional guidance from US Advance Retail Sales figures, given an upside surprise may aid the US Dollar’s recent recovery. While we saw some anemic first quarter US GDP figures, recent improvements in leading indicators like Retail Sales and ISM Non-Manufacturing data hint at a recovery in the second quarter. Optimism about future growth prospects could lead traders to move out of US Treasuries, which would boost 10 year yields and offer some support to the greenback.

Crude Oil Supply Glut Keeps Gains Capped

WTI continues to struggle below the $101.00 handle which has acted as a ceiling for prices since the beginning of the month. The lift in other risk-sensitive instruments like US equity benchmarks has failed to put the wind in crude oil’s sails as a glut in US oil inventories suppresses prices. As noted in prior commodities updates; near-record levels for crude oil stocks and exponential growth in production casts a bearish shadow over crude oil. Expectations of a significant in lift in domestic demand would be required to change the overall outlook for the oil price.

CRUDE OIL TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Crude oil has broken below trendline support following the emergence of an Evening Star formation on the daily. Alongside building downside momentum (reflected by the rate of change indicator) and a move below the 20 SMA a bearish technical bias is offered. However, the daily close above the psychologically significant $100.00 handle suggests the potential for a short-term recovery which precludes new short positions at this stage. Sellers are likely to re-emerge at the 102.30 level of resistance.

Crude Oil: Waiting For Break Below $100 For New Shorts

Daily Chart - Created Using FXCM Marketscope 2.0

GOLD TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Several Doji formations on the daily suggest hesitation from the bears as gold teases at a push below critical support at $1,277. With volatility remaining low (as reflected on the ATR), the current environment may favor range-trading setups, which is further supported by a lack of momentum signaled by the Rate of Change indicator.

The DailyFX Speculative Sentiment Index suggests a mixed bias for gold based on trader positioning.

Gold: Dojis Highlight Trader Indecision

Daily Chart - Created Using FXCM Marketscope 2.0

SILVER TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

A Doji on the daily chart for silver denotes trader indecision near the all-important $19.00 handle. While there are warnings of a potential reversal in the trend, notable selling pressure near $19.70 may continue to cap gains for the precious metal. Additionally, low levels of volatility suggested by the ATR alongside fading downside momentum also hint at a more range-bound market environment for the precious metal.

Silver: $19.00 Handle Remains Critical Support…. For Now

Daily Chart - Created Using FXCM Marketscope 2.0

COPPER TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Copper has vaulted above its descending trendline from the 2014 high and cleared a notable resistance level at $3.085. With building upside momentum (as suggested by the rate of change indicator) and prices above the 20 SMA a bullish technical bias is offered. A break above the $3.149 mark would open an extended advance on the $3.213 (the 61.8% Fib Retracement level).

Copper: Aims Higher Following Bullish Technical Signals

Daily Chart - Created Using FXCM Marketscope 2.0

PALLADIUM TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Palladium prices are being squeezed between trendline support and resistance near the 2014 high at $815. This puts the precious metal at a critical juncture. A break below the ascending trend channel would support a bearish bias with a target offered by the $777 mark.

Palladium: Price Compression Leaves Prices Poised For A Break

Daily Chart - Created Using FXCM Marketscope 2.0

PLATINUM TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Platinum continues to be supported above the $1,427 mark as upside momentum (as reflected by the rate of change indicator) begins to build. Recent price action has failed to confirm the Evening Star formation, and as such a bounce back to trendline resistance may be on the cards.

Platinum: Pushes Back Towards Trendline Resistance

National security specialist CyberSecurity Malaysia has signed a two-year technical partnership with data recovery specialists Myung Information Technologies of South Korea [MIT Korea] and Myung Inovasi Terkini [Myung Malaysia] for its MyCyberSecurity Clinic.

The agreement was recently signed in South Korea as part of a visit by Malaysia's deputy minister of Science, Technology & Innovation, YB. Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar bin Mohamad Diah, said CyberSecurity Malaysia's chief executive officer Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab.

Under the tripartite agreement,  MIT Korea and Myung Malaysia have agreed to provide CyberSecurity Malaysia with their respective portions of technical services; consultancy services; technical & management support services; and training services.

Dr Amirudin said MyCyberSecurity Clinic [MyCSC] is an initiative by CyberSecurity Malaysia to bring trustworthy and convenient digital forensic services such as data recovery and data sanitization as well as consultancy to government agencies, private companies and to the public.

In the 10th Malaysia Plan (RMK10), two areas that are vital for MyCSC operations have been identified, namely technical capability for data recovery, and the repair of hard disks, he said.

MyCSC will develop into a chain of entrepreneur-managed service centres with the objective of helping those in need to recover their information assets from damaged hard drives, said Dr Amirudin. "Members of the public and businesses that suffer data loss will be able to visit the nearest clinic, handover their damaged drive, and receive their recovered data soon afterward."

He said that Malaysia will benefit from the transfer of technology, information and know-how from Korea under the technology partnership agreement, whereby MIT Korea and Myung Malaysia agreed to supply CyberSecurity Malaysia with all relevant technical information as may be required to enable CyberSecurity Malaysia to internally carry out the data recovery and hard disc repair services and to optimise CyberSecurity Malaysia's risk management processes.

Malaysia, through CyberSecurity Malaysia shall be free to retain and use the Technical Information and any ideas, concepts, techniques and know-how obtained in the course of the two-year, renewable partnership, he said.

Both business and personal data will benefit

"In this digital age we keep our data in digital format, be it an important business data or a personal one such as memorable photos from past family vacations. Loss of data can bring not only inconvenience but also stress and huge emotional implications to the owner of data," said Dr Amirudin. "Hence, data recovery is sometimes called a lifesaver because of its significance in retrieving vital information assets for a business or an individual."

"With Myung, we have found a friend that understands how important it is for CyberSecurity Malaysia to provide the Malaysian public and organisations with advanced data recovery technology and techniques," he said. "With more than 300,000 recovered hard drives, Myung has the technical sophistication and market reaches that we would want to emulate in Malaysia."

"As our capacity to capture more data grows, our desire to save that data grows as well," said Dr Amirudin. "We want to keep our conversations with friends and relatives through WhatsApp and email; save work related communications within our new lean and flat teams; and access organisational or technical knowledge that is only available digitally. Every activity that we pursue seems to lead to a digital footprint that is worth keeping forever. But forever is a long time. It is inevitable that at one point or another each of us will face a crisis that, at its source, stems from a damaged hard drive."

Stonetrust provides statutory workers' compensation insurance for construction, wholesale, retail, manufacturing, and other service related businesses currently with more than 4,700 active policies. As the company grew, the need for an outsourced, reliable backup, and managed hosting provider became clear.
